Ahead of its inaugural Corrugated event, taking place from 19 – 22 May at the Gran Via, Fira de Barcelona, FESPA explores corrugated materials’ role in visual communications as it expands beyond packaging…

In retail environments, exhibitions and experiential marketing spaces, there is increased demand for corrugated board to be used in three-dimensional signage and display structures that combine visual impact with practical benefits. And, as brands look for materials that balance creativity, sustainability and efficiency, corrugated has emerged as an ideal solution because it offers structural strength, but is lightweight too.

Corrugated is well-suited for use in temporary retail environments, point-of-sale installations and event displays where quick installation and easy transport are necessary. Its fluted construction creates rigidity without significant weight, which allows designers to build freestanding displays, layered signage and complex three-dimensional forms that would traditionally require heavier substrates.

Where print meets structure

Advances in digital printing have transformed the creative potential for corrugated applications. For example: high-quality graphics can now be printed directly onto its surface with vibrant colour and sharp detail – and this technique enables brands to achieve the same visual standards expected from traditional signage materials. Combining this with digital cutting and routing technologies allows printers and designers to produce intricate shapes, layered effects and sculptural signage elements that add depth and dimension to corrugated displays.

Three-dimensional corrugated signage is especially effective in retail spaces where brands compete for attention. Flat graphics can easily blend into a busy environment, but layered or sculptural elements naturally draw the eye. Corrugated structures allow designers to add height, depth and texture into displays to create immersive brand moments that engage customers and encourage interaction. From product replicas and architectural shapes to tiered product stands and large-scale lettering, corrugated materials support bold, visual storytelling.

Corrugated board is widely recyclable and is often produced using a high proportion of recycled fibre. With an increasing number of brands being under pressure to reduce the environmental impact of their marketing materials, corrugated displays provide a responsible alternative to plastics and composite substrates that can be difficult to recycle. When combined with water-based inks and responsible waste practices, corrugated displays align with the circular ecosystem.

A practical path to more responsible displays

Corrugated displays are practical, and can be engineered for flat-pack transport and simple assembly, which reduces shipping costs and simplifies the installation process on-site. This is valuable for multi-location retail campaigns where displays must be shipped efficiently and assembled quickly by store staff. Structural design features, such as interlocking tabs and slot systems, allow complex structures to be built without adhesives or specialist tools.

For print service providers, the growth of corrugated in signage and display applications represents an opportunity to move beyond traditional flat graphics. By combining digital print, cutting and structural design capabilities, printers can deliver complete display solutions rather than individual components. This opens the door to higher-value projects that integrate graphics, structure and brand storytelling into a single production workflow.

Corrugated board, once seen primarily as a packaging material, is proving to be a versatile medium for three-dimensional signage and display. The combination of its strength, printability and recyclability make it well-suited for use in the next generation of retail and exhibition environments, where visual impact and demand for responsible displays are set to work hand-in-hand.
