Throughout July, we welcomed various members of the next generation to complete work experience at the FESPA office. In our latest blog, intern Spencer Moore shares his experiences and key takeaways from his week at work.
During my work experience with FESPA I was able to establish a much greater understanding of an office environment, FESPA’s flagship exhibition and the wider printing industry.
From the first day, I was welcomed by the team, surrounded by an accepting and productive environment, and was given clear instructions, tasks and a transparent schedule.
Our group’s key advisor throughout the work experience period was Saima. Saima was truly delightful; she was supportive, open and approachable, and checked-in frequently throughout the day, with an effective reflection at the end.
Getting stuck in
As part of our schedule, each department invited us to a meeting where one or two members of staff gave us insights into their roles and teams. These meetings included detailed information about each department’s position in the business, an overview of their daily objectives and useful examples to highlight not only the real-life circumstances, but their application to FESPA and how crucial they are to the business model.
A few of my personal favourites were meetings hosted by Neil Felton, CEO; Andy Froud, Finance and Commercial Controller; and Callum Legg, Group Sales and Project Manager, and Cheryl Moore, Senior Sales Executive, who are both in the Sales team. These meetings gave me a greater understanding of FESPA, but more importantly, an understanding of each department’s purpose, its benefits and drawbacks, as well as the skillset required to operate within them.
In addition to the meetings, we were given applicable, appropriate and intriguing tasks, which gave us an understanding of FESPA, whilst connecting with my group. For example, Michela asked us to research various venues for the FESPA 2027 party. We then presented our findings and received encouraging feedback.
Takeaways
From my perspective, I most enjoyed the meeting with Neil, as it provided a holistic view of how FESPA “aspires” and “educates”, while also explaining the role of a CEO – something I aspire to be. Furthermore, along with all the meetings, it was interactive, with Neil asking us questions, understanding our goals, and providing educational advice and real-life examples from his own career. Specifically, and one thing that will stick with me, Neil asking us to “find our why”.
Reflection
In summary, my time at FESPA was educational and inspiring. It allowed me to narrow my focus of my goals for the future, and provided me with real-life experience. The environment was welcoming and I left having formed genuine friendships and made fond memories.
Overall, I valued my time at FESPA, which wouldn’t have been possible without the people. They’re the true component that made my work experience at FESPA as amazing as it was.
