Squid to send out feelers in sign and graphics market

Lampe Textiles owned Squid will make its FESPA debut in Hamburg, from 8-12 May, with a window film of the same name.

Signage companies are set to discover a revolutionary self-adhesive window fabric at FESPA 2017, after Squid confirmed its attendance at the event this year,

The start up, owned by textile company Lampe Textiles NV is making its FESPA debut in Hamburg, in Hall B7, stand C5.

Already known among interior designers and architects, the new substrate can be printed on with a variety of printing techniques, giving signage creatives new commercial and marketing opportunities to explore at the Squid booth.

Squid is a new self-adhesive, transparent, woven fabric that can be applied directly on to windows or walls. It works with every size and shape of window. There are no fixtures or fittings – users simply cut the fabric to their exact requirements, guaranteeing a precise fit. The patented product sticks to the window indefinitely, but can be removed easily without leaving unsightly liner residue.

The product comes as an unprinted solution securing privacy and solar protection for the B2C and B2B window decoration markets, while professionals in the signage and interior decoration market can rely on a dealer service for printed applications. Installation can be DIY or done by a professional.

Great FESPA expectations

Available in five colours (Chalk, Bone, Oak, Ash and Rock), Squid’s style, versatility and simplicity have made it a big hit in the interior design and architecture markets, breathing new life into homes, offices and public facilities, such as hospitals.

The printability of Squid also presents substantial commercial possibilities. Retailers can now print designs onto the fabric, allowing them to create attention-grabbing shop window displays.

A commercial real estate company could print a design of a shop interior on Squid, then affix the fabric to the window of a vacant shopping mall unit, to highlight how the space inside could be used.

“The high-quality substrate is perfect for digital print. We’ve realised some wonderful results with latex and are currently exploring other technologies. This generates new commercial options for Squid, which we’re excited to share with FESPA visitors,"commented Squid director Johan Bonner.

"The reliability, durability and quality of textile applications are essential for interior design specialists. Combined with the creative added value (digital) printing can bring to the equation, users will have a significant return on investment. FESPA brings together textile, print and interior design experts. The FESPA knowledge pool is unfathomable, so we can't afford not to be there," he added.

Creativity calling

Squid is new to the signage market, but is confident the FESPA audience will be impressed with its key features and put it to the best signage use.

  • Quality: 100% Belgian-produced, woven fabric for outstanding colour representation
  • Sun resistance: reflects up to 36% of the sun’s energy, increasing colour reproduction durability of the image. It also keeps the actual location cooler – tests prove it can reduce the room temperature by 3°C.
  • Safety and durability: heat resistant up to 60°C, fire retardant to M1/B1, moisture resistant so fit for installation in retail locations, and because it’s breathable, it’s suitable for HR++(+) glass / high-performance glass.

On a closing note, Bonner reveals the disruptive origin of the application: “The company’s founder was looking for a window treatment for his son’s student room. The room could not be altered, so he used his expertise to create something quick and easy to cover the window, which could be removed easily afterwards."

"Squid turned out to be a hit product. That’s why we’re taking this fine example of Belgian ingenuity to the next level at Fespa. It’s the perfect show for us to find partners, distributors and market information.”
