gbOn the eve of FESPA Digital 2012, we are launching the biggest survey we have ever undertaken on environmental and sustainability issues.

With increasing pressures from legislators, print buyers, customers, shareholders and employees, we want to find out how screen and digital printers are tackling green issues in their companies.  We want to find out if they have an environmental policy or any certifications and if their customers have demanded green credentials and use of green materials for their printing along with other green and sustainability questions. This is free to enter and results will be made available initially to participants who provide contact details before then being made more widely available to our community.

Typically it is expressed as being "Health, wealth and happiness." This statement may be attributed to James Allen the British philosophical writer from the quotation; "A man is not rightly conditioned until he is a happy, healthy, and prosperous being; and happiness, health, and prosperity are the result of a harmonious adjustment of the inner with the outer of the man with his surroundings." But what does this mean to the everyday person and particularly the printer?

Those who read my energy blog earlier this year will not be surprised that the EU Commission now does not believe that the EU will meet its energy reduction target of 20% by 2020. In fact the latest projection (see below) would indicate only a 9% reduction.

The environment is a hot topic, especially in light of the natural disasters that have happened this year.

The print and paper industry has a reputation for being un-environmentally friendly and the perception is that, if you print on paper, you are "killing a tree".

The advertising and wide format print industries have been collaborating for years to try and make greener billboards, but no one has been able to master the trick – until now. With the unveiling of Europe's first 'eco-board' at a site next to the M4 motorway in London in late June, Ricoh has set the digital signage bar high for others to follow.

Europe's companies need a secure supply of energy at affordable prices in order to maintain a competitive edge. At the same time, the negative effects of energy use, particularly fossil fuels, on the environment must be reduced. That is why EU policy needs to create a competitive internal energy market by developing renewable energy sources, reducing dependence on imported fuels with a lower consumption of energy.

pdf Planet Friendly Summit - Deutsch

What is it?

The Planet Friendly Summit is carefully designed to give you not just a strategic overview of the drivers for adopting sustainable business practices, but also a plethora of 'how to' information so you can begin, or enhance, the environmental sustainability of your business. A host of industry leaders will gather to engage with the clutch of expert speakers FESPA has brought together to debate the key sustainability issues from a business perspective.

Sessions will cover:

• The drivers for implementing sustainable practices in your business
• Case study from a leading printer

• Overview of what corporate customers are looking for in sustainability terms
• Insight into forthcoming legislation from European Union

Where and when?

The Planet Friendly Summit is taking place on 24th June at 10.30 and in Rooms A21 and A22 at Messe Munich during FESPA 2010

Why?

It's happening to enable printers to better understand their environmental obligations and hear how other printers have tackled environmental management in their companies

Who is taking part?

There will be around 100 delegates attending, comprising leaders of print businesses, purchasers of print and print-related products from major corporations (eg Nike), and suppliers to this group.

Plus, we will be hearing from a variety of leading speakers:

Mr Richard Owers - Marketing Director, Pureprint Group
Mr Steve Lister - Business Development Director, Robert Horne Group
Mr Mike Horsten - Owner, ZEMT/COSO
Mr Paul Machin - Owner, Machin Consulting
In the open discussion that follows we hope to be joined by
Michel Caza – FESPA Board member and original author of the first Planet Friendly Guide
Steve Goddard – HP - Environmental Leadership Programme Manager

Anything else you would like to add?

This debate is bound to be popular with places being reserved on a first come first served basis.
