NATURally - HEXIS goes green

NATURally NEXISPRESS RELEASE 20 May 2010: NATURally - HEXIS goes green

HEXIS has created NATURally, a range of products that aim to be more environment friendly. These films are PVC-free and do not use any chlorine, solvents, plasticisers or heavy metals. The new range will be presented to the public at the FESPA show in Munich 22 to 26 June.

The films in the NATURally range carry a M1F1 fire rating according to the NF F 16-101 standard and are particularly suitable for use in public places where regulations with regard to fire hazards are much more stringent. Products with a M1F1 fire rating are fire-retardant and do not release any toxic smoke.

Because of the absence of solvents HEXIS does not need to use the oxidiser during the manufacturing process. This has the benefits of reduced energy consumption for the drying of the films, reduced risk of fire on the production line, no risk of atmospheric pollution through the release of VOC and maximised safety for manufacturing staff.

NATURally NEXISThe films in the NATURally range are free of PVC and free of plasticisers and for this reason there is no risk of contamination with the environment. Also they do not contain any heavy metals such as chromium or lead.

LATEX products

The latex films fit into the NATURally range of products by their very nature. Indeed, latex films are made from an aqueous emulsion of a plastic material. The production process is very specific and reduces the impact on the environment to the largest extent possible. HEXIS consumes less energy in the production of the raw materials required for their production. In addition HEXIS uses less organic materials derived from mineral oil.

Latex gloss

At the FESPA show HEXIS will launch two new products:

HXL300WG2 (WG = white gloss)

Le HXL300WG2 is a self-adhesive media for solvent inkjet printers. It is made of a white latex film with a thickness of 100µm coated with a grey pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. The adhesive has a micro-structure to ensure easy transfer and convenient egress of any trapped air bubbles. The film can be printed with Mutoh Bio Inks and with HP Latex Inks. The surface finish is gloss.

PL300CG (CG = clear gloss)

The PL300CG is a cold laminate for the latex film HXL300WG2. Il is made of a clear latex film with a thickness of 30µm coated with a pressure sensitive acrylic adhesive. The surface finish is gloss.

D’you Wannabe a Wrap Star?

Tuesday, 18 May 2010 10:41
FESPA 2010 Wrap CupFESPA and sponsor Avery Graphics invite entries to FESPA 2010 Wrap Cup vehicle wrapping competition

Would-be ‘wrap stars’ are invited to enter the FESPA Wrap Cup (www.fespa-wrap-cup.com), the live vehicle wrapping competition running throughout FESPA 2010 (Messe Munich, 22-26 June 2010).

Over the course of the five day event 64 vehicle wrappers will compete to win thousands of Euros worth of prizes and the coveted title of ‘FESPA Wrap Star’.

Each day 16 individual competitors will be whittled down to one during three competitive rounds. ‘Wrappers’ will be challenged to wrap a variety of cars with speed and precision.  They will be given just half an hour in the first round, increasing with each progressive stage, and culminating in a daily final. The winners from each of the first four days will then go on to compete in the two-part Grand Finale on the last afternoon of the show, where they will be challenged to wrap the side of a Chevy Corvette convertible and the front of a racing motorbike - all in one piece.

“The wrappers will be evaluated on the quality of their work, although speed will be a decisive factor should there be a draw,” says FESPA Wrap Cup event coordinator Dirk Moebes of Digital DesignWare. “This is going to a fun event, both to watch and take part in, but above it will be an excellent way for competing print service providers to showcase their skills among peers.”

Competitors will be judged by a panel of three, including Robert Ivers, founder of the PDAA (Professional Decal Application Alliance) and Hans van den Berg, technical training manager of FESPA Wrap Cup sponsor Avery Graphics.

Any company with some experience of vehicle wrapping can enter a representative.  To sign up, visit www.fespa-wrap-cup.com. A modest registration fee of Euros 200.00 is payable, but all participants are guaranteed to take home a prize package worth at least 2000€, even if they do not survive the first round. The finalists will be presented with products and services worth more than 8,000€ each at an exclusive awards ceremony following Saturday’s final.

FESPA 2010 Wrap CupFESPA Sales & Marketing Director Marcus Timson adds: “Entering the FESPA Wrap Cup needs no incentive. It’s an amazing platform for gaining exposure to potential customers, and participants are guaranteed to take home a share of 200,000€ worth of superb prizes. We’re looking forward to a spectacular and adrenaline-powered competition, showcasing the skill and creativity that are making vehicle decoration one of the most innovative and effective outdoor marketing tools in today’s promotional mix.”

The FESPA Wrap Cup is part of the FESPA Innovate! Programme at FESPA 2010.  For more information about the show, and the full programme of satellite events, please visit www.fespa2010.com.

Content-rich one day summit programme to debate issues and promote best practice

FESPA has published details of its European Sign Summit 2010, which is being co-hosted with the European Sign Federation (ESF) during FESPA 2010 in Munich (22-26 June 2010).

Full information about the event can be found at a new microsite at www.signsummit.com or via the main FESPA web site at www.fespa.com.
Part of the FESPA Innovate! Programme, the European Sign Summit will take place on site at Messe Munich on Wednesday 23rd June 2010 (the second day of the exhibition), from 11.00h to 18.30h.

The aim of the European Sign Summit is to provide sign makers, or service providers looking to develop their sign making expertise, with high quality information on key issues affecting their business.  A host of leading industry thinkers will share their ideas and expertise on current and future trends, the challenges confronting the industry, potential opportunities and sources of innovation.

Delegates will participate in sessions focussing on four key topics:
Matching light sources to application
Effective use of Corporate Identity in Signage
Case study: the Automotive Industry
The ‘Dark Skies’ Challenge
The event will open with a keynote session delivered by David Pitt, CEO of the Principle Group www.principleglobal.com , an international brand implementation company that brings global brands to life in any environment, anywhere in the world.  David’s expertise is in turning brand concepts into reality, translating ideas into three dimensions.

David and other speakers will address burning questions such as: What threat does price competition from overseas suppliers represent? Is the environmental agenda a threat or an opportunity for sign makers? What forthcoming EU legislation will impact on your business in the next twelve months, and how?

Other speakers at the European Sign Summit include ESF Vice President and sign making pioneer Luc Steegmans; Wouter Moons, co-founder of Belgian printed electronics specialist Lumoza; international light source expert Dr Spiros Kitsinelis; and Italian sign, engineering and R&D expert Fausto Martin.  Dark Skies campaigner Friedel Pas of the International Dark Sky Association will step into the fray, engaging with the audience of senior sign professionals on the topic of light pollution and best lighting practices.

Commenting on the launch of the European Sign Summit at FESPA 2010, FESPA managing director Frazer Chesterman says: “ESF and FESPA recognise the increasing convergence between the print and sign industries, which has become more apparent in today’s challenging climate.  Companies can no longer solely concentrate on their primary activities; they need to look at complementary services and products that enable them to provide complete and innovative solutions for clients.  ESF’s knowledge of the sign industry, teamed with FESPA’s expertise in running successful high quality summits for the imaging industry, means the European Sign Summit is set to be an imperative event for the road to recovery and future success.”

The European Sign Summit sessions will be followed by a panel discussion inviting interaction between delegates and speakers, and will conclude with an opportunity for delegates to network informally over drinks.  The event will be conducted in English, with simultaneous translation available by advance request into French, German, Italian and Spanish.

To book a place at the one-day European Sign Summit, visit www.signsummit.com.  The delegate rate is Euros 245 for members of an ESF- or FESPA-affiliated association, or Euros 345 for non-members.  Each delegate place includes all sessions, online access to all presentations, food, refreshments and attendance to the Networking VIP Drinks, as well as VIP access to the FESPA 2010 exhibition.

FESPA Worldwide Survey 3Opportunities arising from the shift to digital production are keeping printers optimistic for the future of their individual businesses despite the downturn, according to FESPA’s third Worldwide Survey, the results of which are published today.

On a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is ‘very optimistic’, the mean for respondents’ individual businesses was 7.6, compared with 6.9 for the wide format industry as a whole.  This is consistent with the equivalent survey results in 2007 and 2009.

Worldwide Survey 3 underlines clearly how client demands for shorter turnaround, just-in-time delivery and shorter runs are driving wide format printers towards digital technology.  Close to 70% of respondents are seeing these trends increasing.  The greatest pressure appears to be on faster turnaround, with 81.5% stating that this is a growing requirement from clients.

Versioning and/or personalisation, online ordering and integration with other marketing collateral (such as direct mail) are also client priorities, with around half of printers reporting a trend in demand for these capabilities.

Conducted in partnership with InfoTrends, the latest FESPA Worldwide Survey involved the largest research sample to date, attracting online responses from dozens of countries in Europe, Asia and North and Latin-America in February and March 2010.

All of the 582 respondents affirmed that the percentage of their revenue coming from digital projects will increase in the next two years, rising to close to 50% of income for businesses with fewer than 100 employees.

This expected revenue growth is stimulating robust demand for new equipment, with 37.4% of respondents planning to purchase a new wide format printer in the next 12 months, and a further 33.8% still undecided about such a purchase.  More than half of respondents expect their spend on digital wide format media and consumables to increase in the next 12 months.

Print service providers are seizing positive opportunities to grow and diversify using digital, with 78% of survey respondents expanding the range of applications they produce.  68% of respondents have looked at new market opportunities or developed innovative processes or products to tackle the impact of the economic downturn.  Nearly a quarter of respondents see the future success of wide format print service providers as being able to deliver marketing solutions for the client.

FESPA Sales & Marketing Director Marcus Timson comments: “With just three months to go until FESPA 2010 opens its doors in Munich, this latest FESPA survey profiles a global community of print service providers that has remained resilient and adaptable in the face of significant economic challenges.  Our recent series of FESPA Economy Surveys has highlighted the dramatic commercial impact of the 2008/9 downturn on wide format printers.  However, wide format printers remain optimistic, alert to opportunities and focused on pursuing new applications or niche markets to generate growth for their businesses.  The dynamics between clients and print service providers are clearly changing, but the most successful printers are adapting resourcefully, embracing digital technology and blending it creatively with other processes and value-added services to deliver the right solutions to clients’ challenges.”

Banners, posters, signs and POS/POP continue to be the leading applications for most respondents, with demand remaining stable across these product categories despite the economic downturn.  A notable decrease was in backlit displays, with the percentage of respondents regularly producing these falling from 46.2% in 2009 to 26.4% in 2010.  Increased demand was reported for billboards, photographic applications, decals and presentation graphics.  Growth is also evident in emerging application areas such as textile, interiors, flooring and fine art.

Thinking ahead to their next print engine, almost a quarter of respondents are most likely to purchase a UV-curable inkjet device, though interest in technologies such as eco-solvent and latex inkjet is beginning to overtake that for more established solutions such as aqueous and solvent inkjet.  Technology choice still seems to be a source of confusion for many printers, with almost 16% of respondents undecided on their next purchase.

The survey shows a converging community of businesses servicing their clients with wide format printed products.  22% of respondents state that the term ‘digital printing specialist’ best describes their business, followed by 12% who define themselves as ‘screen printers’ and a further 12% preferring the more generic ‘commercial printer’.  The remaining 54% of respondents also included graphic designers and advertising agencies, ‘quick printers’ and corporate reprographic departments, photo labs and reprographic businesses, exhibition builders and sign shops.
