The Innovator

Innovation is the most important component of any healthy, sustainable and profitable business. Every fortnight, 'The Innovator' will highlight a new innovation, product, solution or trend taking place out there in the print and media stratosphere.

Try as you might to ignore it, 3D printing doesn't look like it's an idea that is going to pass quietly into the ether any time soon. This realisation dawned on me the other day when I was watching Lisa Harouni's compelling and thought provoking TED talk about how this disruptive technology might change the manufacturing model as we know it.
'Genius' is an oft overused word in modern society. However, a billboard advertisement in Canada was recently brought to my attention that's the very definition of the word. The billboard, which was unveiled earlier this year, was dreamt up by Vancouver-based creative agency Cossette for fast food behemoth McDonalds.

It may be one of the coolest printing innovations to hit the industry for decades but few people have mastered the trick of making money out of 3D printing. Until now. Pioneering print enthusiasts Bilal Ghalib and Alex Hornstein, otherwise known as the 'Pocket Factory', are currently driving across the US with two 3D printers in the trunk of their Prius.
We've covered a lot of innovative billboard and bus shelter posters in previous blog posts but this week something came to our attention that truly breaks the mould.
