History The General Strike of 1926 in the United Kingdom spread to Singapore and caused many of the Chinese printers to experience labour troubles for the first time. This prompted several printers to get together and discuss forming an association to protect their interests, but the initial excitement fizzled out due to a lack of consensus and trust among the printers. Ten years later, in December 1936, the staff of nine Chinese printing companies went on strike after serving an ultimatum to their employers on their demands for higher pay and better working conditions. After a series of meetings, 32 Chinese printing firms including the nine that were affected by the industrial action decided to set up an association. The Master Printers' Association was formed with the membership opened to all Chinese printing companies in Singapore. |
